What’s New in CBD?

Updated: Aug 16, 2024

So..what is CBD?

CBD is short for Cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is a natural compound found in the Cannabis sativa plant. It is one of over 100 cannabinoids present in the plant, including THC. However, unlike THC, CBD does not get you “high”, but has other supplemental benefits. CBD has gained popularity in recent years for its potential health benefits, such as reducing inflammation in the body, relieving pain, and improving mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. Other cannabinoids present in the Cannabis plant are CBN, which is thought to have non-intoxicating pain relief properties and CBG which has anti-inflammatory properties. CBD’s usual formulation is as an oil, but it can also be sold as an extract, vaporized liquid, and oil-based capsules. Prescription CBD has been shown to be an effective medication for individuals experiencing epileptic seizures.

In the United States, data has shown that cannabis consumers vary in how and why they use cannabis products. From the National Association of Convenience Store (NACS) article, What’s New With CBD (Haar, 2022) it was stated that 20% of cannabis users in the United States use CBD only, 63% use THC and CBD products, and 16% use THC-only products.

So..what is on the horizon for CBD?

There is still a regulatory grey area that many CBD businesses must deal with, but according to a Forbes article: The Future of the CBD Industry in 2022 and Beyond (Sill, 2021), there are changes on the horizon in the CBD industry.

  1. CBD has become big business and is set to get much bigger and more diverse.

  2. Regulatory challenges remain and it will take congress to clarify things.

  3. Big box retail access will spur sales while stabilizing and improving supply chains.

  4. More big names will get into the game through acquisitions once regulating landscape clears and stabilizes.

  5. Education, quality assurance and safety measures will skyrocket.

The crucial developments that will remove barriers for businesses in the CBD industry will be:

  1. The FDA classifying CBD as a dietary supplement.

  2. The industry’s unrestricted access to financial services.

  3. An intelligent regulatory framework that increases product quality and safety across the board.
